For over 100 years, there has been evangelism in Hopiland.  And yet, the Christians were isolated and cut off, and therefore, not able to witness to their own people.  Here are some examples of what has happened recently.

* What to do in the kiva; One of the ladies from a very traditional village decided to still go into the kiva for an all night         dance and songs.  She said that she came out with her daughter and went home to sleep at 1:00 A.M. because the         Lord told her "you could go home and rest because I paid the price."  She went and slept  and went back down into the     kiva and when the ladies were dancing and singing to make fun of the men who are not going out to the fields to plant,     she did not join them but repented instead.  When all the ladies were coming out to go to the shrine to pray, she and     her daughter came  home because the Lord told her not to go.  

*  A long lost bull found: A man lost his bull and could not find it for three years even though he looked absolutely             everywhere.  The lease was coming up and he would have to pay much money for that bull if he did not find it and             return the bull to the owner.  As he was driving to into a town one day, he saw what seemed like a figure of Jesus in         the clouds.  He felt that he was supposed to pray to Jesus to find that bull.  A few moments later, there was the bull in     the field by the side of the  highway.  He was able to find a friend in town with an empty trailer at a gas station and get     the bull and bring it home.  He told the story of this miracle of the long lost bull,  in the kiva, and told the men to pray         to Jesus. (This story was told to me by an elderly lady from my Church at Hoetvilla.  This was of her brother)

*  Seeing through the glass: Our Hopi brother was so desperately sad when he was in prison and could only see his
    children through the glass window.  He wanted so much to hug them and hold them and let them know that he loved
    them.  Then he heard the Lord say to him, "this is how I feel when you withdraw your love from me and I cannot tell you     that I love you or touch your heart."  The previous warrant from a city which would have been 45 years in prison, until he     turns 80 years old has been suddenly dropped by the court. Gillie was notorious for getting into fights with the other
    men and even the police force in Hopiland. Now, he wants to be notorious for following Jesus as he has been following
    Christ and writing songs for the Lord for the past six years.

*  "Those are my tears":  Before being pardoned, Gillie wanted to just end his life and asked the Lord to take him away
    for he had run out of hope and he knew he had disappointed so many people.  As he wept bitterly, he heard the Lord
    telling him to wipe the tears from his face and to anoint himself with those same tears.  When he asked, "why, Lord?",
    he heard the Lord answer him saying, "because those are my tears."

*  Praying out loud at Hopi Cultural Center: One lady from our New Life group had a dilemma for she could not decide
    what she ought to do in one situation.  She called the other lady in the group and met together for lunch. When they
    saw yet another lady from our group, they called her over, and held hands, and prayed together for guidance. These
    are all professional ladies within the Hopi tribe, and yet were not ashamed to be seen in the public and pray together         in the name of JESUS.

*  3 Christian ladies chosen to pray: Three of the Hopi ladies in another village felt that they are still to go down to the
    kiva to pray for their own people.  Four ladies are picked every year to come out from the kiva and run in four different
    directions and pray. Ruby, one of the ladies and two other Christian ladies were picked.  Ruby carried the eagle
    feather which represents prayer for her people.  She ran and prayed for her nation for this was an honor to be picked
    amongst all the ladies of the village.  She said she knew the feather did not have any power in itself but only Jesus can     answer prayers.

Yet another rock was thrown through one window at the Church in Hotevilla after all the glass were put back.  Another window got a couple of Beebe gun holes, but nothing more since then.  We had a community meeting at the Church and eight elders showed up and they had some good advises and wanted to have a sale to raise the funds for the Church to replace the windows.  A letter of apology was also asked to be written from the boys who confessed to stealing a lot of money from a summer team who came to help the Church.  But, I was badly criticized later by those who believed that the boys saying, "sorry" was enough and that we should not discipline them.  Sometimes, these attacks come at such consistent rate, for simply and quietly standing up for what seems to be clearly the Lord's standards, that I feel drained.

WIll and I  will be going away, starting November 4th for a month.  First, to spend five days with our son, John, at Wheaton College at the "family night" and some more with the Roberts, our friends.  Then, we will fly over to England for a week of YWAM base leaders' workshop.  We have now for several years desired to take a sabbatical for 6 months and go to a "Leadership Training School" but could not afford to get away before.  We've never been invited for a one week course so we will go especially since we've found cheap flights and afterwards, leave a week open for any divine appointments.  Then, we will go and spend several days at Malta Islands with one of our DTS speaker, Brian Hogan, and his family and rest another week.

We recognize that the property or any building is not important in itself unless the Lord is in it.  We have no desire to spread ourselves thin by acquiring more staff and property in YWAM.  However, we believe this is the time to purchase in Flagstaff to see further all that He is doing with the Hopi and the Native peoples around the world.  Please let us know if you have not received our news recently in the mail concerning the new property in Flagstaff; we have lost our mailing list and had to start over.  It is an unheard of price for 12 acres and beautiful rooms and buildings and someday, there will be many thousands around the world who will come to be trained and to worship with the Hopi, Navajo and Apache and many other  believers in Christ.  Please be a part of this adventure by praying with us!
